This is the obverse of an East India Company silver one rupee piece, dated 1788, from the Straits settlement, Pulu Penang.

By the mid-18th century Scots were influential in the East India Company, founded in 1601 to pursue trade in the East. Building on kinship and a strong sense of identity, Scots did well out of service in India.
