In memoriam card

In memoriam cards were distributed to friends and relatives by bereaved families. They acted both as a memento of the dead and as a symbol of social status. This example is one of a collection of 25 cards.

The card has been printed with a black border, in keeping with the sombre nature of the occasion.

Grief was displayed through the wearing of certain clothes and jewellery and the use of stationery. Ceremonies marking baptism, marriage and burials still took place in the home and new affordable products offered new ways of marking these occasions.
