Letter, to James Rocheid, Inverleith, Nr Edinburgh

This letter, dated 6 May 1778, is from a London tailor to James Rocheid of Inverleith, near Edinburgh. The letter contains three small sample swatches.

The letter would have been folded up so that James Rocheid's name and address (on the left-hand side of the picture) appeared on top. It would then have been sealed with sealing wax.

Letters made it easier to conduct personal and business relations. While the early 18th century saw the development of the horse post, the first London to Edinburgh mail coach was introduced in 1786. Letter delivery was considerably speeded up.
