Letter, written by Lord Buchan to William Strachan MP

This letter, dated Kirkhill, 9 July 1781, is from Lord Buchan to William Strachan MP. In it, Lord Buchan informs Strachan that he has been elected an honorary member of 'our Scotch Society of Antiquaries'.

The letter would have been folded up so that William Strachan's name and address (on the left-hand side of the picture) appeared on top. It would then have been sealed with the red sealing wax which can be seen at the edge of the letter.

Before the introduction of the postage stamp in 1840, sealing wax was applied to a letter and stamped in order that it be identified and authorised.
