This is a certificate of the Band of Courage Temperance Society of Motherwell in Lanarkshire. It is in the name of William Wood, who signed the pledge to abstain from alcohol on 27 June 1878.

Drunkenness was a serious problem in Victorian Scotland. In the 1830s Glasgow had one spirit dealer to every 14 families. By the 1840s Edinburgh had one licensed public house per 30 families and Dundee one per 24.
