Letter written by David Hume
Add to album

This is the second page of a letter written by David Hume in May 1776, shortly before his death. Hume was one of the greatest Scottish philosophers and his original thinking was evident in his 'Treatise of Human Nature', published in 1739.

Addressed to 'Andrew' the letter mentions, amongst other matters, the fact that Hume had been ill with an intestinal disorder. Taking the waters at Bath had improved his health and his appetite.

Hume's radical philosophies were not understood in his own time. His 'Treatise' was ill-received by the press and it was not until the 20th century that it was fully appreciated.
