Letter (front), written by Sir David Wilkie

This is the front of a letter, dated 7 November 1833, written by Sir David Wilkie, Scotland's most celebrated early 19th century artist. The letter is addressed to William Allan of Parliament Square in Edinburgh.

The letter would have been folded up so that William Allan's name and address (on the left-hand side of the picture) appeared on top. It would then have been sealed with the red sealing wax which can be seen in the centre of the picture.

Before the introduction of the postage stamp in 1840, sealing wax was applied to a letter and stamped in order that it be identified and authorised.
