Commission as Lieutenant-General, from James VIII

This commission from James 'VIII', the 'Old Pretender', is subscribed by the Earl of Mar, to the Marquis of Tullibardine, appointing him Lieutenant-General of Forces. It was signed at the Jacobite court in Avignon and dated 2 January 1717.

With the death of James VII in 1701 his son led the Jacobite Cause. James VIII to the Jacobites, he was the Old Pretender to his enemies. After the Union he tried to take advantage of the government's unpopularity in Scotland.
