Covenant, for the Parish of Newbattle, Midlothian

This is the Solemn League and Covenant of 1643 for the parish of Newbattle in Midlothian. It was a printed document which was sent round the country for subscription.

The covenant appeals to the English to adopt Scottish Presbyterianism. It is signed by the Earl of Lothian, Robert Leighton, afterwards Archbishop of Glasgow, and others.

The term 'National Covenant' drew on Old Testament notions of covenants between God and Man, and between God and Israel. It suggested that the Scots were comparable to the Children of Israel and thus a chosen race.
