Covenant, for the Burgh and Parish of Dumbarton

This is the National Covenant for the burgh and parish of Dumbarton. The National Covenant called for all Scots to oppose Roman Catholicism and the policies of Charles I. First signed in 1638, it was copied for distribution to every burgh and parish.

National covenant on vellum, engrossed "For the Burghe and Parochin of Dumbarton, 1638"

The term 'National Covenant' drew on Old Testament notions of covenants between God and Man, and between God and Israel. It suggested that the Scots were comparable to the Children of Israel and thus a chosen race.
