Medal (obverse) of the Highland Society of Glasgow

This is the obverse of a silver medal of the Highland Society of Glasgow, awarded in 1840 to John Mathieson, an apprentice smith and bell hanger, for his good behaviour and exemplary conduct.

The obverse is inscribed, 'Badge of Merit from the Highland Society of Glasgow'.

Societies were established to support Highland migrant workers and to help them engender a sense of a Gaelic community. They encouraged Gaels to hold on to their distinctive culture, while providing prizes for students.
