Medal (obverse), of Edinburgh Skating Club
Add to album

This is the obverse of a silver medal of the Edinburgh Skating Club. The medal, which is suspended from a red ribbon, was presented to James Balfour in 1841.

The obverse is inscribed with a laurel wreath with the recipient's name in the centre, 'JAMES BALFOUR/25th DECr 1841'. The surrounding text reads, EDINBURGH SKATING CLUB/HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINCE ALBERT PATRON'.

The cost of sporting equipment and limited access to land kept poorer people out of many sports. As incomes rose clubs were formed, organizing the use of grounds and increasing the amount of competition. By 1900 there were clubs for almost every sport.
