Medal (obverse), of Edinburgh Skating Club

This is the obverse of a silver medal of the Edinburgh Skating Club. The medal, which is suspended from a red ribbon, was presented to James Gibson Thomson in 1826.

The obverse is inscribed, 'EDINBURGH Skating CLUB/JAMES GIBSON THOMSON/Saturday 14th January 1826'.

The cost of sporting equipment and limited access to land kept poorer people out of many sports. As incomes rose clubs were formed, organizing the use of grounds and increasing the amount of competition. By 1900 there were clubs for almost every sport.
