Medal (obverse), presented to W B Dickson at Inchkeith Highland Games

This is the obverse of a silver medal presented to W B Dickson in 1828 for the 'Hop, Step and Jump' event at Inchkeith Highland Games.

The obverse depicts a landscape with a highlander in the foreground, holding his shield and sword. The surrounding text reads, 'THE HIGHLAND CLUB OF SCOTLAND'.

In the 1820s athletics and gymnastics became popular, and at the same time the centuries-old tradition of holding Highland Games was reshaped and encouraged by enthusiasts of Celtic culture.
