This silver denarius was minted in Rome by Marcus Aemilius Scaurus and Publius Plautius Hypsaeus in 58 BC. It was a special issue authorised by the Senate, as indicated by the legend 'EX S.C'. This picture shows the obverse of the coin.

The obverse depicts a kneeling figure holding an olive branch in front of a camel. The full legend should read 'SCAVR AED.CVR' above (on two lines) and 'REX ARETAS' below. '[E]X S.C' on either side stands for 'ex senatus consulto'.

King Aretas of Nabataea in the Middle East surrendered to Scaurus. When Scaurus returned to Rome in 58 BC, he was elected curule aedile, an important judicial official, as noted in the legend. He produced lavish games in his year of office.
