Coin (Obverse), groat, from reign of Robert II
Add to album

This is the obverse of a silver groat minted at Perth, between 1371 and 1390, during the reign of Robert II. The coin was worth four pence Scots.

The obverse bears a crowned bust with a sceptre in a six-arc tressure. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Robert, by the Grace of God, King of Scots'.

The first Stewart king, Robert was the grandson of Robert Bruce and nephew of David II. His coins are similar in weight standard and general appearance to the latest issues of David II. His mints were at Edinburgh, Perth and Dundee.
