Coin (obverse), pattern half-merk, from reign of Charles I

This is the obverse of a silver pattern half-merk minted at Edinburgh in 1636, during the reign of Charles I. The coin was worth six shillings and eight pence Scots.

The obverse bears a crowned portrait of the king. Behind his head is the number 'VI' over an '8', indicating the coin's value. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Charles, by the Grace of God, King of Scots, England, France and Ireland.'

The pattern half-merk was an experimental design never used for circulating coinage.
