Add to album

This is the obverse of a James III billon penny minted at Edinburgh between 1484 and 1489. The coin was worth one penny Scots. It was part of a hoard found at Rhoneston in Dumfriesshire in 1961.

The obverse bears a crowned bust. There is an annulet each side of the crown. The Latin inscription translates as: 'James, by the Grace of God'.

Some James III coins continued to be minted for a short while after his death.
