Coin (obverse), halfpenny, from reign of John Balliol
Add to album

This is the obverse of a silver halfpenny minted between 1292 and 1296, possibly at Berwick, during the reign of John Balliol. The coin was worth one halfpenny Scots.

The obverse bears a crowned head with a sceptre. The Latin inscription translates as: 'John, by the Grace of God'.

John Balliol ruled Scotland between 1292 and 1296 under the authority of Edward I of England. Balliol's rebellion against this position led to Edward's invasion of Scotland in 1296. Most Balliol coins bear no mint name but were probably struck at Berwick
