Add to album

This is the obverse of a silver 30 shilling piece minted at Edinburgh between 1638 and 1642, during the reign of Charles I.

The obverse bears an image of the king on horseback. There is a sideways 'F' and a five-pointed star below the rear hoof. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Charles, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland.'

The 'F' on the coin is the initial of Sir John Falconer, Master of the Mint at this time.
