Add to album

This is the obverse of a gold Britain crown minted at Edinburgh in 1637-8, during the reign of Charles I. The coin was worth £3 Scots or five shillings English.

The obverse bears a crowned portrait of the king. There is a small 'B' below the shoulder. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Charles, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland'.

The 'B' on the coin is the initial of Nicolas Briot, Master of the Mint at this time.
