Coin (obverse), Ducat, from reign of Mary, Queen of Scots

This is the obverse of a Mary, Queen of Scots ducat, a high value gold coin worth 60 shillings Scots. Minted in Edinburgh in 1558, it is the earliest Scottish example of two busts appearing on one side of a coin.

The obverse has a Scottish imperial crown above facing busts of Francis and Mary. The Latin inscription reads: 'Francis and Mary, By the Grace of God King and Queen of Scots, Dauphin of Vienna'.

Mary's coinage is divisible into five phases, reflecting her early life, two marriages and two widowhoods. During her reign numerous issues appeared in gold, silver and base metal, many of them comprising denominations never previously struck.
