Coin (reverse), crown, from reign of Mary, Queen of Scots
Add to album

This is the reverse of a gold crown minted at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh between 1542 and 1552, during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. The coin was worth 20 shillings Scots.

The reverse has a cross fleury with thistles in the angles. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Let us follow the arms of the Cross'.

Because they were struck at the mint Holyrood Palace, these coins were known as 'abbey crowns'.
