Add to album

This is the obverse of a gold crown minted at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh between 1526 and 1539, during the reign of James V. The coin was worth 20 shillings Scots.

The obverse bears a crowned pointed shield with a saltire to each side. The Latin inscription translates as: 'James V, by the Grace of God, King of Scots'.

Because they were struck at the mint Holyrood Palace, these coins were known as 'abbey crowns'.
