Estimate for building Fort George

This manuscript gives an estimated cost for building the new Fort George at Ardersier Point, east of Inverness. The total represented a considerable Government commitment to establishing effective control over the Highlands following the 1745 Rising.

Estimate for the building of Fort George on Ardersier Point, c. 1745

Fort George was designed to accommodate around 2,000 troops. It survives today, virtually intact, and still serves as a military garrison.
