Engraving, of The Downsitting of Parliament

This engraving - the only known depiction of the original Scottish parliament in session - shows the ceremonial procession into the parliament. It was published in 1720 in Chatelain's 'Atlas Historique' but was engraved at an earlier date.
The engraving features men in late 17th-century dress. The Scottish crown jewels can be seen and the throne is occupied by the monarch's representative, the Lord High Commissioner. Some details may have been taken from a 16th-century drawing.
