Painting, of Lady Mary Stewart, wife of 7th Laird of Freuchie

This oil painting depicts Lady Mary Stewart, wife of James Grant, seventh Laird of Freuchie. It was painted in 1658 by David Scougal. The same artist also painted a portrait of the Laird.

On her wrists, Lady Mary Stewart is wearing beads of coral or a semi-precious material such as amber. These were probably worn as an amulet offering magical protection against accident, disease or death.

David Scougall was an eminent 17th-century portrait painter who modelled his work on that of Anthony Van Dyck and Michael Wright. His works in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery include a portrait of the first Marquess of Argyll.
