Trade token (obverse), Farthing, of Andrew Melrose, Edinburgh

This is the obverse of a copper farthing trade token of Andrew Melrose, an Edinburgh tea and spirits dealer. It dates from between around 1780 and 1830.

The text on the obverse advertises the issuer's goods - 'ANDW. MELROSE/TEA/& SPIRIT/WAREHOUSE/301 CANNONGATE'.

Due to a lack of low-value coins, many companies issued their own tokens, with which goods could be bought. Trade tokens also acted as advertisements for the issuer.
