Advertising token (obverse), of Waverley Electric Works, Portobello, Edinburgh

This is the obverse of a brass advertising token of the Waverley Electric Works in Portobello in Edinburgh. The token dates from the 1895.

The obverse is inscribed with 'Waverley Electric Works, Portobello, Edinburgh', 'Mathew Buchan' and a list of products made by the company.

Electric street lighting began to replace gas in the 1890s, and by the early 20th century electric-powered trams were running in some cities.
