Trade token (obverse), of Alloa Colliery, Clackmannanshire
Add to album

This is the obverse of a copper five shilling trade token of Alloa Colliery in Clackmannanshire. Originally a Mexican 8 real coin of 1794, the coin was counter-stamped and reissued as a token.

The obverse has a circular stamp in the centre with the text, 'Payable at Alloa Colliery' surrounding a 5 shilling motif.

In the second half of the 18th century trades and companies began issuing trade tokens to alleviate the shortage of short change. The tokens circulated locally and could be used to buy goods or could be redeemed by their issuers for regal coinage.
