Medal (Obverse), commemorating David Livingstone

This is the obverse of a bronze medal by MacGillivray, commemorating David Livingstone. The medal dates from 1873.

The obverse depicts Livingstone's head and shoulders.

David Livingstone (1813-73) first visited Africa in 1841 and quickly became involved in exploration. He was an opponent of the slave trade, and believed the only way to rid Africa of slavery was to open up the interior to 'Commerce and Civilisation'.
