This silver medal of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland was issued in 1871 to commemorate the founding of the Institution. Made by W. MacPhail, the medal depicts a bust of James Watt.
The bust is surrounded by the text, 'Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland/Founded 1857, Incorporated 1871'.
By 1765, Watt had developed an engine where the steam used to drive the piston was cooled in a separate condenser. By achieving three times more work for the same amount of fuel, Watt's engine was extremely efficient.
