Writing set

This bell-shaped horn writing set dates from the early 18th century. Quills were kept in the main body while the 'bell' end held ink.

The four-sectioned case also includes a sander for holding powdered sanderach, a form of resin. This was sprinkled onto paper to absorb excess ink.

Writing letters became an increasingly important means of long distance contact as postal services improved. Basic writing materials were pen, ink and paper, but quill cutters, sand dredges, and writing sets were all part of the letter-writer's equipment.
