Medal (obverse), of Kelso Skating Club, Scottish Borders

This is the obverse of a silver medal of Kelso Skating Club in the Scottish Borders.

The obverse is inscribed, 'KELSO/Skating Club/Instituted 9th Feb 1814'. The surrounding border is decorated with a pattern of acanthus leaves. The medal has a swivel suspension loop.

The cost of sporting equipment and limited access to land kept poorer people out of many sports. As incomes rose clubs were formed, organizing the use of grounds and increasing the amount of competition. By 1900 there were clubs for almost every sport.
