Medal of a Cycling Club

This silver cycling club medal was presented by Mr Guthrie Lornie of Birnam in Perthshire in 1879.

The star-shaped medal is attached to a suspension bar which is inscribed with the initials 'V' & 'R'. The bar is fixed to a blue ribbon. The back of the medal is inscribed, 'Challenge Medal / KABC / Presented by Mr Guthrie Lornie of Birnam 1879'.

The first modern bicycle was the safety bicycle which was invented in the late 1880s. In 1888 the first pneumatic type was made and cycle touring and racing rapidly became popular.
