Money box, possibly made in Kirkcaldy

This earthenware money box, also known as a pirlie-pig, belonged to a Kirkcaldy family and was possibly made at Gallatown Pottery in the town.

The pirlie pig is painted in blue and black with sprigs of leaves. It is inscribed 'Barbara Cowan, 1875'.

The town of Kirkcaldy on the north shore of the Firth of Forth was one of the major centres of Scottish pottery production. In the second half of the 19th century it had four separate factories.
