Add to album

This bronze seal matrix of the Dominican Friary in Edinburgh was found at Topcliffe in Yorkshire. It dates from the 14th century.

The matrix has a representation of the Coronation of the Virgin.

Seals are evidence of the paperwork involved in running a complex organisation. They were signs of the medieval Church's huge authority, combining the functions of signature and logo to show that documents were genuine.
