Printing plate for a satirical card

This engraved copper printing plate is for a satirical card commemorating the execution of Jacobite Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, in 1747. Lovat tried everything to avoid being convicted but eventually died bravely on the headsman's block.

Engraved copper plate showing the execution of Lord Lovat, 1747, used for printing souvenirs

After the unsuccessful rising of 1745, those Jacobite lords who had been sentenced to death were allowed the privilege of beheading because of their rank. Others convicted of treason were hanged, disembowelled and quartered.
