Depositions of Bess Hog, Marion Meik and Patrick Watson, charged with witchcraft
Add to album

These are the depositions of Bess Hog, Marion Meik and Patrick Watson, who were tried for witchcraft having been identified as witches by John Kincaid, the famous witchfinder. They were later strangled and burned at the stake in Haddington in 1649.

The depositions are contained in a green-leather bound volume.

In late 16th and 17th century Scotland, between 3000 and 4000 people were executed as 'witches'. Most were women - poor spinsters and widows without means of support and living on the fringes of society.
