Letter (back), To Lady Ross, Foulis Castle, by Dingwall, Ross-shire

This is the back of a letter written by Anne Ross of Edinburgh to Lady Ross of Foulis Castle by Dingwall in Ross-shire. Dated 4 May 1764, the subject matter of the letter is fabric samples.

The letter would have been folded up so that Lady Ross's name and address appeared on top. It would then have been sealed with the red sealing wax which can be seen in the centre of the picture.

Before the introduction of the postage stamp in 1840, sealing wax was applied to a letter and stamped in order that it be identified and authorised.
