This parliamentary speech by John Hamilton, 2nd Lord Belhaven is 'On the Subject Matter of an Union Betwixt the Two Kingdoms of Scotland and England'. It is dated 1706.

Lord Belhaven's parliamentary speech, `On the Subject Matter of an Union Betwixt the Two Kingdoms of Scotland and England', November 1706

Lord Belhaven was a vociferous defender of the Scottish parliament and claimed that if the Treaty of Union was passed, Scotland's independence and sovereignty would be lost. The Treaty was eventually ratified on the 16th of January 1707.
