Seal matrix
Add to album

This lead seal matrix was found on the beach below Dunstaffnage Castle near Oban in Argyllshire. It is thought to date from the 13th or 14th century.

The circular matrix has a representation of a galley. The inscription is partially illegible but it is believed to indicate that the matrix belonged to a close relative of the Lord of the Isles.

Dunstaffnage Castle dates from the 13th century and may be attributable to Duncan MacDougall, founder of nearby Ardchattan Priory. In the 18th century Flora MacDonald was briefly imprisoned in the castle. It was last inhabited in the early 19th century.
