Grave slab (cast)

This is a fibreglass cast of a stone grave slab from Finlaggan on Islay in Argyll. The slab dates from the 16th century.

The slab is carved with a hull of a ship and the shaft of a sword which may reflect features of the life of the person for which it was commissioned.

Carved stone graveslabs illustrate the Celtic or Gaelic tradition in Scotland. They are found throughout the West Highlands, commissioned as memorials to important or influential people.
