Cast of a grave-slab
Add to album

This is a cast of a grave-slab from Finlaggan on Islay in Argyll. The work of a local craftsman, it was possibly made for one of the MacEacherns of Islay, the hereditary smiths to the Lord of the Isles.

The slab is a good example of West Highland sculpture. At the top is an anvil, indicating that it was made for a smith.

Carved stone graveslabs illustrate the Celtic or Gaelic tradition in Scotland. They are found throughout the West Highlands, commissioned as memorials to important or influential people.
