Cup, owned by Baillies of Mellerstain
Add to album

This two-handled silver cup was made in Edinburgh in 1709-10 by John Seatoun for the family of Baillie of Mellerstain. The Baillies were a middle-ranking aristocratic family from Berwickshire.

The front of the cup is engraved with the Baillie coat of arms, crest and motto. The domed lid with acorn finial is similarly engraved.

Grisell Hume married George Baillie, a member of Parliament, and they travelled widely across the country. Lady Grisell's household books show that the family was regularly commissioning individual goldsmiths to make and engrave objects.
