Hornbook for writing practice

A hornbook was used for writing practice. Letters or words were protected by a transparent layer of horn and traced over. This example dates from the late 18th century.

The hornbook has an iron back, folded over at the edges to secure the plate of horn in front. Underneath the transparent layer of horn are two lines of small letters for tracing over.
