Dish

This ceramic dish was found at Bothwell Castle in Lanarkshire in 1937-1938. It dates from the 16th century and was used to catch the drips from roasting meat.

The oval dish has a handle on one side. There is a dull olive-green glaze on the inside.

Situated on the Clyde, Bothwell Castle was probably built in the second half of the 13th century and was an important fortress during the Wars of Independence. It has been called 'probably the greatest ruin of its kind in Scotland'.
