Preaching tent
Add to album

This wooden preaching tent, from the parish of Carnock in Fife, was used as a temporary pulpit for open-air services. It dates from the early 19th century. In the period before the 19th century such tents were common.

Preaching tents such as this were large and dominating but temporary and fragile structures, having to be readily dismantled and stowed away.

Preaching tents were erected in the open-air for the 'sacramental occasions' of the yearly or half-yearly communion services when congregations were generally too large to be accommodated within the church itself.
