Armchair, associated with the Irvines of Drum, Aberdeenshire
Add to album

This oak armchair dates from 1652. The back is carved with a variant of the arms used by the Irvines of Drum in Aberdeenshire.

The coat of arms is carved in low relief on a rectangular panel and features three holly leaves. On either side is the letter 'I'. Above the arms is the date, 1652.

In 1652 Sir Alexander Irvine was Laird of Drum. He had a daughter living in that year called Jean. 'I' and 'J' were interchangeable at the time so it is possible that the chair was made for Jean Irvine.
