Silver medal (obverse) commemorating the Battle of Culloden

This is the obverse of a silver medal commemorating the victory of Prince William, Duke of Cumberland at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

The obverse bears the head and shoulders of the Duke in profile.

Strengthened by the return of troops from continental Europe, government forces commanded by the Duke of Sutherland continued their pursuit of the Jacobites. On 16 April 1746, at Culloden near Inverness, the Jacobite army was routed.
